Overview
Super Formula is a Japanese open-wheel racing series, known for its high-performance cars, competitive racing, and strong connections to Formula 1. It is widely regarded as one of the top open-wheel championships in the world, with a reputation for producing talented drivers who often go on to compete internationally.
It is the successor to the All-Japan Formula 3000 series, which was introduced in 1973 and ran until 1995. The inaugural season kicked off in 1996 under the Formula Nippon branding until the end of the 2012 season. It served as a stepping stone for Japanese drivers to get noticed by Formula 1 teams. In 2013, the series was rebranded as Super Formula, with new cars, rules, and an enhanced international appeal.
