Overview

Tetrapod (テトラポッド, tetorapoddo), or wave breaker (消波ブロック, shōha burokku, lit. "wave-cancelling block") is a concrete structure found at beaches to prevent erosion and reduce the force of water on the shore side.

Waves are sucked into the gaps between the blocks, where they disperse the direction of the water flow and cancel it out by colliding with the flow from another direction.

Tetrapods are set up in large numbers in the same place, but as mentioned above, the combination of their structures creates complex water currents in the water. If you get caught in them, you will die.

The space between the tetrapods is so narrow that it is difficult to rescue or even retrieve a body.

Therefore, it is extremely dangerous to approach tetrapods underwater.

Even from the land side, there is a danger of falling, so be on your guard. It is not advisable to use the tetrapod as a substitute for an athletic activity or for fishing on it.

In Japan, tetrapod is a registered trademark of Fudo Tetra. Because of this it has been a few non-trademarked names in Japanese. In 2020, Elecom received official approval from Fudo Tetra to make Tetrapod Bluetooth speakers.
