Overview
Violence (暴力, bōryoku) is to injure and destroy others, or the power to do so. It is assault, injury, abuse, destruction, etc.
It is said to be on the increase with the evolution of all living things, especially mammals, and is also included in the violence of cannibalism and infanticide in ancient times. Before the Middle Ages, when human rights were ignored, violence was commonplace, but as time progressed, other means of communication (verbal arguments, money transactions) were chosen as much as possible, and today, it is strictly regulated by law.
As a rule, violence is justified in a modern state of law only in self-defense to protect oneself from the violence of others, or when legally justified by the state (there are still areas of the world where private lynchings are permitted).
In peaceful Japan, few people commit violence in public. However, domestic violence (domestic abuse, child abuse, etc.), workplace violence (black companies), school violence (bullying, corporal punishment), and other forms of violence that are committed privately in closed spaces where the outside world cannot see, still occur frequently.
In recent years, this may include verbal abuse such as slander, and psychological abuse such as moral harassment. In addition, the number of situations in which children who have grown up unable to verbalize their feelings turn to violence is also on the rise.
