The Yamato-class Battleships were the largest Battleships ever built. Both Yamato-class vessels would be sunk by US Navy air attacks during the final years of World War II. A third vessel (the IJN Shinano) was converted into an Aircraft Carrier but was sunk the US submarine USS Archer SS-311.
