Overview

Mental illness (精神疾患) is a term for difficulties caused by disorders of the brain or mind. Also called mental disorder.

It has been linked to severe stress, heredity, drugs, brain damage from injury, and other factors, but the process leading to its onset remains an unresolved mystery. In the past, there was no specific treatment for the disease, but today it is treated with a combination of medication and psychotherapy (talk therapy, often just called therapy). Even so, most drugs relieve symptoms, and there is no cure for the disease itself, so it often takes a long time to cure.

If the symptoms are mild, the patient can go to the hospital from home, and can balance treatment and social activities (including work). However, if the symptoms are severe enough that the patient cannot maintain their sense of self, they're is admitted to inpatient care or an isolation ward and forced to cut off all contact with the outside world.

In a broad sense, it includes personality biases, e.g., personality and behavioral disorders. In ancient times, it also included epilepsy, but today epilepsy, along with Guillain-Barré syndrome and other disorders, is generally distinguished from psychiatric disorders as a neurological disease.
