Capcom (カプコン) is a Japanese video game manufacturer based in Osaka, Japan, that develops and markets arcades and consumer games. The company is listed on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Overview

Capcom (カプコン) is a Japanese video game developer and publisher that had made many multi-million-selling game franchises.

Capcom s a clipped compound of "Capsule Computers".

History

The company was founded in 1983 by Kenzo Tsujimoto, the founder of I.R.M. (Now Irem Corporation). At the time, Irem was owned by Eizo Corporation, a display manufacturer in Hakusan, Ishikawa Prefecture and Tsujimoto was the chairman of the board.

At the time, Tsujimoto was about 1 billion yen in debt due to the end of the invader boom, and he even sold his house. Michael Koga, the president of Taito, asked him if he would give him some money to try his hand at business, staring a new business by borrowing 150 million yen as start-up capital, which was Capcom (the funds were intended to be borrowed for five years, but repaid in eight months when Michael Kogan died suddenly six months later.).

As can be seen from the year of its founding, the company was a newcomer to the industry at the time, and was late to enter the home video game market as well as the arcade market.

As mentioned above, the company was one billion in debt from its inception and was unable to produce any major hits, and even its home video games continued to lose money until Street Fighter II became a worldwide hit. The company has continued to produce a wide variety of hit games, from arcade games to home video games. Currently, the company mainly produces home video games.
