Courage the Cowardly Dog
Courage the Cowardly Dog (おくびょうなカーレッジくん, Okubyō na Karejji-kun, lit. Cowardly Courage-kun) is an animated television series that has aired on Cartoon Network since January 2001.
It exists through four seasons, with a total of 52 episodes (102 segments).
In its home country, it is part of the Cartoon Cartoons framework, What a Cartoon!, which employs a winner-take-all system in which new animators are asked to create a work, and viewers vote to select a regular program (Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls (the old series) also won here).
For the winner, a pilot version of The Chicken from Outer Space (宇宙ニワトリの侵略) was created, which successfully became a regular show. The pilot was later nominated for an Academy Award.
Despite being a Cartoon Network original, it was ranked 12th in the SKY PerfecTV! Anime Awards 2002.
It is basically a comedy, with some horror elements mixed in. Occasionally, live action and computer graphics are used.
Speaking of pictorial aspects, the characters in cartoon works are often deformed and four-fingered, but this work had five-fingered characters and not so deformed except for the animal characters.
In recent years, a special called The Fog of Courage (霧にキリキリマイ) was broadcast (this one was made entirely in CG).
Currently, a remastered version is being broadcast, as is The Powerpuff Girls (former TV Tokyo version).
It has been digitally remastered, with panels added on both sides. The aspect ratio was changed from 4:3 to 16:9 but it does not look too different due to the original digital drawing.
In addition, promotional videos are added as a filler to match the broadcast time.
