Fighting games (格闘ゲーム, kakutō gēmu) are a genre of video games in which the player controls a character equipped with martial arts skills with the goal of defeating the opponent.
In the early days, they were treated as a part of beat 'em up action games or as a bonus, and the emphasis was not on "fighting" as it is today.
