The Kiev-class (known in the Soviet Union as Project 1143 Krechyet (gyrfalcon)) were a class of four aircraft carriers operated by the Soviet Navy. To allow them to pass through the Turkish straits, they were designated as 'aircraft-carrying cruisers'. As a result, their size limited them to carrying the Yak-38 Forger VTOL aircraft
