Overview
The Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story (マギアレコード 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ外伝) is an animation series based on the game series of the Magia Record.
It was announced on 1 September 2018 within the Magia Day 2018 event that the series would be adapted into a TV anime.
The first season of the TV anime series was broadcast from January to March 2020.
Animation production is by Shaft. General director and script writer is Gekidan Inu Curry, while Akiyuki Shinbo, who directed the TV anime and the theatre version of "Puella Magi Madoka Magica"(PMMM), is working on the production as an Animation Supervisor.
The opening theme song is sung by TrySail, the same as in the game version, and the ending theme song is by ClariS, who sang the theme song in PMMM.
The second season - The Eve of Awakening (マギアレコード 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ外伝 2nd SEASON -覚醒前夜-) was broadcast from the end of July (or beginning of August) to September 2021. Prior to this, a compilation of the first season and a special program were broadcast. The second season has a total of eight episodes.
The final season - Dawn Of A Shallow Dream (マギアレコード 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ外伝 Final SEASON -浅き夢の暁-) was then broadcast on 3 April 2022. It was four episodes in total, but was broadcast all at once on the same day, following the postponement of the broadcast from the original schedule for the end of 2021.
In the TV anime, as well as the main characters well-known from the game version, such as Team Mikazuki Villa and Momoko's Team, a new anime-original character, Kuroe, is introduced.
The theme of this work focuses on how ordinary magical girls live, what relationships between magical girls are like, and what form magical girl population take as a society. For this reason, compared to PMMM, this work has more of an ensemble dramatic nature, with many magical girl characters, although the story is centred on the story of Iroha Tamaki.
While the screenplay for the anime series is based on the script of the original game version, it has been boldly restructured and has a completely different ending.

Differences from the game version
The story of the anime series is based on the script of the original game version, but reconstructed so that the story is complete only in the anime. In the anime version, several settings are different and the story of Iroha Tamaki, the protagonist, has a different ending.
Before the broadcast, the general director, Gekidan Inu Curry (Doroinu), stated in an interview that the anime version would not be completely different from the game version, although the detailed settings were slightly changed so that the story could be completed by watching only the TV anime version.
In fact, in the first season of the anime, the only major difference from the game version can be seen in the first episode, and the story from episode 2 onwards generally follows the content of the first arc of the game version, from chapter 1 to the middle of episode 6, chapter 6.
In the second season of the sequel series, the situation is changed somewhat. The first episode of the second season is based on the first chapter of the game version and begins with a merging of the events of the third episode of the sixth chapter of the first arc of the game version's Another Story, with Madoka and Homura making a full appearance. The only change was that Mami's position in the game version was changed to Sayaka in the anime. However, the story from the end of the first episode onwards, while based on the content from the game version's episode 7 of chapter 6, developed in an unique way, with the anime's own interpretation of the story and changes to the settings.
In the final season, while some of the events that took place in the story were retained, most of the storylines turned into dramatically and explicitly different ones, finally reaching a rather tragic ending to the story.
Iroha Tamaki failed to save the irreplaceable magical girls immediately in front of her, and the disaster that visited Kamihama City destroyed their city, and she was unable to accomplish her original purpose.
Thus, contrary to the interview content prior to the broadcast, the ending was very different from that of the game version, and as a result, it caused a controversial reaction amongst the viewing population.
Regarding this, Gekidan Inu Curry (Doroinu) said, "The anime version of Magireco is a form of complementing the only universe of the app version of Magireco by projecting a part of it inside the Law of Cycles." according to a tweet.
The story of Magia Record in the anime version could be said to be the story of a failed revolution by magical girls who have been nobody.
