Overview
Space Channel 5 (スペースチャンネル5, Supēsu Channeru Faibu) is a series of music games developed by Sega. 1999 saw the release of the first game on Dreamcast of the same name, and 2002 saw the release of the second game, Space Channel 5 Part 2, on PS2 and Dreamcast. A new version of the game is also release years later in 2020 for the PlayStation VR, Oculus Quest, Viveport and SteamVR titled Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash. In August 2022 it was announced by Sega that a movie based off the first two Space Channel 5 games is being made.
Story and Gameplay
In the game you play as Ulala, a reporter for the space broadcasting station Space Channel 5, solves various cases by shooting and dancing in the universe of the 25th century.
The main rule of the game is to visually memorize your opponent's performance and movements, and replay (reproduce) them to defeat the enemy. The best way to explain the gameplay is that it plays like Simon Says. Key inputs are up, down, right, and left directions, attack beam with the A (○ for PS) button, and rescue beam with the B (× for PS) button. The voice for both beams was Chu in the first game, but in the sequel the rescue one was Hey. The game is set in a televised news setting, and if you make too many mistakes, your rating drops and the game is over.
Although set in a future universe, the setting is based on a 1970s disco-style groove, giving the game a somewhat retro-futuristic feel.
