Usagi Tsukino (月野うさぎ, Tsukino Usagi) is a carefree but whiny schoolgirl who is known as the leader of the Sailor Guardians. She is the love interest of Mamoru Chiba.

Usagi is a very famous character in the magical girl genre. Since Usagi has existed since the early '90s, her show has been seen by millions of fans worldwide. Because of this, both the anime, manga and the characters tend to have different names and nicknames depending on the various countries. For instance, Usagi is mostly known as Bunny (usagi meaning "bunny" or "rabbit" in Japanese) in some foreign dubs, even though Usagi is not a common given name in Japan.

Whenever Usagi encounter the evil forces she must defeat, she transforms into a Sailor Guardian by using a special device (usually a brooch) followed by her original transformation command "Moon Prism Power (Make-up)!". Her main attack after transforming starts by her pre-battle taunt pose: "In the name of the Moon, I shall punish you!" This is a very regular routine for magical girls when going into battle mode in the Sailor Moon series.

Appearance

Usagi is known for her very long and blonde hair, which is styled into two pigtails with odangos on top. Her odangos remind other characters (Mamoru) of dumplings (or meatballs, depending on adaptation), and since Usagi is a huge fan of food he takes the chance to give her a new nickname; "dumpling head"/"meatball head". This hair style is a regular style that she wears both as a civilian and after the magical girl transformation.
