Overview
VOCALOID had a very long history where its origin traces itself way back where it was first a joint research project between the Pompeu Fabra University in Spain and Yamaha Corporation back during 2000. The first 3 softwares released for the VOCALOIDS during March 2004 were LEON, LOLA, and MIRIAM, which they all have no representative characters of their own.
Aside from illustrations posted that are highly related to the products, there are also illustrations posted with the tag UTAU or VOCALOID Subspecies, which includes custom vocaloids that are not in anyway related to the official products, and also considered as fan creations.
Since VOCALOID is highly famous, sometimes there are people who draw VOCALOID illustrations to gain fame or to raise viewpage counts.
Since the creation of pixiv, VOCALOID has been continuously famous throughout the years even today. While the popularity is gradually fading out, it is still one of the most used tags in pixiv, along with Touhou Project.
As of May 25 2011, 216408 illustrations related to this tag have been posted on pixiv.
One interesting thing to note is that PIAPRO, a site similar to pixiv, where most self-created Vocaloid songs are posted, do contain VOCALOID illustrations as well.
For the Japanese, it is also easily prone to many orthographical variations (intentional or unintentional) like : VOC@LOID, VOCAROID, VOCALOIDO and so on.
VOCALOID was originally famous only for DTM field and maniacs, which is why the popularity for this software was very low until Nico Nico Douga came in. For those who are unfamilar with VOCALOID would have mistaken Hatsune Miku for being the first ever born VOCALOID software/character. Indeed, if one actually catch on the meaning of her name, it wouldn't be surprising if it caused misunderstandings for most of the people who are casuals to the franchise.
