Overview
Scientist (科学者, kagakusha, サイエンティスト) refers to people whose profession is the study of science. Within science, people in the filed of natural science tend to be called scientists.
Natural science is derived from natural philosophy in the West. The goal of natural philosophy was to determine truth and bring new knowledge to light, and it was a genuine interest in truth and knowledge that drove natural philosophers.
However, after the 19th century, when scientific research was pursued by professional scientists, science became separated from philosophy, and a tendency emerged to give priority to utilitarian research.
The application of science to technology has always had a significant impact on society. Their research can have unfashionable consequences in military terms. Even in the fields of genetics and bioengineering, although there are many positive aspects, such as saving lives from devastating diseases and solving food crises, there are fears that they may conflict with what can be called the "realm of the divine".
Scientists are also human beings, and they can go off in inhumane directions. The combination of the danger of being a scientist and the dangerous aspect of science has given rise to the character of the mad scientist in the world of fiction.
