Apostole (使徒, shito) or disciple often refers to the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ in a narrow sense (mainly in Japan), but in a broader sense it refers to Christian missionaries who played important roles and their titles. In Japan it is often used as a motif for manga and anime characters, and is particularly famous as the name of the fictional enemies in the science fiction anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.
