Diavolo

1

A character of the manga JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5 Golden Wind.

This is the “test”. I’ve received a “test” to overcome the past

The growth of an individual… is to overcome his immature past…

Overview

The last boss character of “Golden Wind”, Part 5 of the manga “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure”.

His name was first written as “ディアヴォロ” (later ディアボロ).

The boss of the huge gang “Passione”, which controls Neapolis.

He is 33 years old and was born in 1967 (or 35 years old and born in 1965, in the anime version).

By drug trafficking, which is a forbidden move for gangs, he made enormous profits. The number of drug crimes in Europe has increased sharply since 1986, and the number of drug crimes committed by youngsters, as well as the deaths have become 20 times greater.

Character

He has a ruthless and cautious personality, and was very careful to hide his identity even in the gang, so almost no one was aware of his true identity. In operating the gang, he is charismatic enough to give his life to the hands of high-ranking subordinates such as Pericolo and Carne. He hides all his information, including the past, from others, and whoever tries to inquiry into that will be eliminated mercilessly. He is the type of villain that would do any evil things that is good for himself. He is called the nauseous evil by Bruno Bucciarati because he would calmly bring misfortune to those innocent people.

Nevertheless, he did advise Bucciarati, who interrupted him dealing with his daughter, that in view of his contribution, he should leave as if he had seen nothing. And he hid himself from the cleaner who came to clean the hotel room using his stand ability, which showed that he did not do things like hurting others for no reason. But in other words, if there is a reason, he can be really ruthless. In fact, he killed a fortune teller who noticed his secrets without hesitation.

He grew more cautious because newly-joined Giorno Giovanna followed Bucciarati, who left the gang, without hesitation, which made him think that Giorno’s very first intention of joining the gang was to defeat himself as the boss. And since he was unable to put an end to Bucciarati because of Giorno, he also warned Squalo and Tiziano, who he sent out as pursuers, that the one they should be most wary of is Giorno.

In fact, he has a dual personality, and shares the body with a timid boy called Vinegar Doppio. But he is different from others with a dual personality, because he is accompanied by another soul. When Silver Chariot Requiem was activated and individual souls were replaced, only Doppio was replaced with Bucciarati, and Diavolo used his ability of changing personalities freely to move to Mista’s body, which was then possessed by Trish’s soul.

When he is replaced by Doppio, not only his personality, but also the physique and age of his appearance change. It is also possible for Diavolo’s personality to function in the body of Doppio. This feature has made searching for his true identity even more difficult. The fortuneteller practiced on him said, “Light and Shadow, Outer and Inner, Two-sided Life, you’re always winning with this secret and that character of never giving up”, “As long as this secret is there, people’s deaths will continuously bring you happiness, and the glory will not be lost”, which implies that as he wishes, there will be a bright future for him.

Diavolo lends Doppio his own stand ability “Epitaph”, so that even if Doppio is alone in danger, he’s unlikely to die in daily life. In addition, it is reasonable to assume that Doppio leads a comfortable life with the gang’s money, since he is well-dressed and has a credit card given by Diavolo. Diavolo understands the importance of Doppio, and it can be said for Doppio, there’s more than enough reason to be loyal to Diavolo.

In Italian, “Diavolo” means “demon”.

Appearance

He has glaring eyes very similar to those of King Crimson, and even when he’s in Doppio state, when Diavolo’s personality comes out, the expression of his eyes changes into glaring. He has pink long hair with green spots, but according to the original author, that seems to be dyed. The author said he made it into a leopard pattern to make him look punk.

In the monologue scene just before he handed over his daughter, he wore something like a robe. And then he appeared in the crypt, though his entire body was painted black due to the hidden identity, his suit and tie could be seen. And in other people’s imagination, he often wears suits.

When his identity was revealed, he took off Doppio’s sweater and fought with a net-like underwear on his upper body.

Suit and tie→ a robe that covers his whole body→description of parts other than his face→his real face in old time revealed by a death mask from his youth→his whole body was revealed in the skirmish before last battle. His appearance surfaced step by step.

Stand “King Crimson

It has the ability to skip time and move freely in the period of time skipped. And it is also able to predict things in ten-odd seconds. See corresponding entry for detail.

Diavolo’s track

His mother was a female prisoner serving a prison. Since babies can’t be raised in prison, Diavolo was adopted by a priest of Sardinia, his mother’s hometown. His mother was sentenced to 10 years in prison for bank robbery and inflicting bodily injury, and had already served two years in the female prison. The man who was his father died more than 2 years ago. It was added a little in the anime version that Diavolo, just after birth, was not crying at all, but had already opened his eyes. And although it is an anime-version original, the guards could not hide their surprise about this impossible pregnancy and impossible birth.

When he turned 19, the priest discovered that he had buried his mother alive under the floor of his room. He then set fire on the village and pretended to be dead in order to go into hiding (the anime suggests that the priest who knew the secret was murdered with a pickaxe by Diavolo. On the surface, he is a slow but gentle young man, and he met Donatella around that time too). After that, he travelled to Egypt and participated in a part-time job of excavation. He found a total of six Stand Arrows that are able to detect stand abilities, ran away with them and disappeared. Five of them were sold to Enya the Hag at a high price (in the anime version, Diavolo sold them to her in exchange of the way to use), and the remaining one was used to expand his gang.

Before the gang was formed, he was dating Donatella Una under the pseudonym Solido Naso, and accidentally made her pregnant. However, he wasn’t aware of that and broke up with her (in the anime original which depicts their encounter, instead of saying that Donatella was interested in Diavolo, it was Diavolo who fell in love with her at first sight and started dating her).

Later, Donatella, who knew that herself was about to die, asked her neighbors to search for a Solido Naso for her daughter a few days before her death. Those who heard that began to whisper, “Naso is boss’s pseudonym when he was young. Maybe Trish is the daughter of boss?” The boss thus became aware of the existence of their daughter.

When he became the gang’s boss and learned the existence of his daughter Trish Una, who was connected to his past, he ordered Polpo (and later Bucciarati) to protect her and bring her to him, so that he can end her with his own hands. But this attempt failed because Bucciarati and Giorno stopped him when Trish was handed over. As a result, the guard team left him. He sent his bodyguards down to them, but were all defeated. When Bucciarati and his team members were heading to Sardinia, the place that would be a clue to himself through Trish, he said, “(I can’t say that there is no clue connected to my true identity), but however good you were as a subordinate, I can’t leave that up to you”, and headed for a cleanup in person.

While chasing Bucciarati, who came to his hometown Sardinia to search for clues, using Doppio’s personality, he encountered Risotto Nero, the leader of the Assassination Team. He was then driven into a dilemma, since Bucciarati and the team members came to know his existence because of his battle with Risotto. However, he turned that into an asset and killed Risotto. And when he escaped from the crisis, he pierced Leone Abbacchio in the abdomen and killed him.

Later at the Roman Colosseum, he killed Jean-Pierre Polnareff, who was teaching him the secret of the arrow, and Narancia Ghirga, who acted as the scout of the team.

He then knew the secret of the arrow and tried to take it back from his daughter, but failed because Trish was counterattacking desperately and Bucciarati sacrificed his own life, and Giorno got to use the arrow.

The boss, who was cornered, thought of withdrawing for the time being, but decided to kill Giorno because of his emperor-like pride that he would always be in the apex and had always overcome crisis. With King Crimson’s ability, he easily evaded Mista’s bullets, but his eyes were blinded with blood by Giorno. After blocking his view, they pulled out his heart and won―

The result of the future is supposed to be that Diavolo continues as a winner.

His stand ability, which was deemed by himself as invincible, was disable by Gold Experience Requiem, which Giorno discovered using the arrow. And the future in which Diavolo will continue to be the winner was *ruined*. After taking a muda muda rush, he couldn’t even reach the end of being killed, and was ironically being stabbed by a drug addict who suffered from the drug that Diavolo himself spread; or lost his balance when being barked at by a dog and fell to the road, then run over by a car. He was so terrified of this unknown death threat that will happen at any time, in any place, that he would scream even when there was only a girl talking to him. He is continue dying somewhere in the world.

Quotes

“This is the ‘test’. I’ve received a ‘test’ to overcome the past”

“I don’t know what that is, but take this!”

“I, Diavolo, am the Emperor! Still unchanged!”

Don’t get close to meeeee!!!

Diavolo in ASB

Diavolo appeared in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle showed an overwhelming sense of coercion with Toshiyuki Morikawa’s powerful acting.

Before the release of All-Star Battle, it was showed that King Crimson’s ability was reproduced (Skip time in order to avoid Mista’s bullets and Kakyoin’s Emerald Splash. Also, he can evade automatically with Epitaph predicting the future). Also, in his battle with Kars, he used King Crimson to erase the time and dodging Light Slip Blades one after another. With these fierce battles to the fans’ delight, Diavolo’s strong character style was shown.

As for his actual performance in the game, his gauge skills only include an automatic avoidance and striking skill because of his cautiousness in the original work. However, his combo damage is high, and although he has a short range, he can use the striking skill “Time erase, let me jump over…!!” to approach the opponent with ease.

In particular, the skill “It was a meaningless act” which consumes the gauge and can avoid attacks are so powerful that it is possible to unilaterally reject the opponent’s combo and enter a combo himself. When the game was first sold, this skill consumes 0.5 gauge point, so if you discard all other gauge skills and only use the “meaningless…”, with the gauge points earned by combo hindrance, it is possible to make the situation “it’s always my turn” (Now it is changed into 1.5 gauge points). As maybe expected, the director himself said “we didn’t consider the balance of the battle because the emphasis is on reproducing the original”, it can be said that the nauseous evil was well reproduced.

In the character ranking, he was among the top along with DIO since the release, and that position is still not threatened even with the update. We can confirm Diavolo’s overwhelming existence and hidden terror once again.

Diavolo in EoH

He appeared at the end of the story. Due to the influence of change caused by DIO in the parallel world, he was freed from the power of Golden Experience Requiem, and met Giorno and others again at the Colosseum. He was able to kill some of the Joestars if he wanted to, but he did not dare to do so and showed up in front of Giorno and others. Although Diavolo lost all his position and money in the previous battle, the thing he most wished to regain was his emperor-like pride. He needed to do only one thing for that purpose, that is, to defeat Giorno and move on…For Diavolo at that time, that was his only goal.

But again, it was Diavolo who fell on his knees after the fierce battle. Giorno said, “it is meaningless to do the same thing over and over again”, and Diavolo left, saying that he would win in their next battle.

After that, he didn’t show up in the story, but the rest of his trail was depicted in the missions (battles in the extra story). After teaming up with Fugo (in a brainwashed state) to start a rematch, this time his teammate, Fugo, teamed up with Giorno to challenge Diavolo. Having fought with Giorno for four times, Diavolo still haven’t reached the truth of victory. There are also missions of him teaming up with Trish to fight DIO (Part 3) and Giorno, but of course his daughter didn’t trust him a bit. If they win, Diavolo would say, “My daughter’s ability will never reveal the secret of King Crimson”, and Trish declared that “(Diavolo is) a wicked man who will only work to protect himself. I can’t trust him”.
