Iwo Jima, officially called lōtō (硫黄島 or Sulfur Island) is an Island of the Volcano Islands or Iwo Islands. The island is well known for the Battle of Iwo Jima which occurred between February and March 1945.
Iwo Jima is still closed to the public due to unexploded ordnance from the Pacific War. In addition to the JASDF which operates an air base (former Central Field), Carrier Air Wing 5 of the US Navy at times sends aircraft to Iwo Jima for training. US Military aircraft also refuel from Iwo Jima.
