Overview
Kowloon City (九龍城) is one of the districts in the Kowloon City District in New Kowloon, Hong Kong. This does not refer to Kowloon Walled City as that was demolished in 1994 and Kowloon City took its place.
Etymology
In Japanese the "城" can stand for fortress. It is thought that the name derives from the fact that Kowloon Walled City, was built as an Imperial Chinese military fort, used to stand there.
In a narrow sense, the name refers only to the downtown area around the Kowloon Walled City.
Now that Kowloon Walled City has been demolished, Kowloon City is a residential area centered around a bustling shopping district.
In Japan, Kowloon City is often referred to as Kowloon Fortress or Kowloon Castle in reference to Kowloon Fort (what Kowloon Walled City is called in Japanese).
Even on pixiv, almost all of the illustrations with this tag are depictions of Kowloon Walled City.
