Naoshi Kanno (1921-1945)
Nickname(s): Bulldog, Yellow Fighter, Kanno the Destroyer
Affiliation: Imperial Japanese Navy
Score: 72 (including co-operative shoot-downs)
As a flight student he destroyed his aircraft several times due to rough maneuvers, including nearly coming into contact with his instructor's aircraft.
He once shot down a B-24 in an air defense battle on Yap Island by hitting the tail of his aircraft against the tail of the B-24.
In air combat, he is a typical in-fighter, aiming and shooting at the cockpit from close enough range 'to see the enemy pilot'.
Overview
Naoe Kanno is a Witch in the World Witches series and one of the main characters in the 2016 anime Brave Witches.
She is the rival of the protagonist Hikari Karibuchi, and later becomes a good friend who she acknowledges as her 'Aibou'(sidekick, partner).
Personality
She is one of the Fusō Navy's flying aces. She is bold, courageous and a pure fighter with a strong prowess. She excels at the tactic of getting close to her opponents and avoiding them at the drop of a hat. Her fighting style is "If the bullets run out, use your sword; if your sword breaks, use your own hands", and her pet theory is that "the bigger the enemy, the more worthwhile it is to destroy them". She swoops down from directly above her target and shoots as she passes by.
Born to strict parents, she was a quiet girl who loved to read as a small child. She was devoted to literature, writing tanka and poetry in her diary. She also admired Gallic literature and specialised in Gallic language at military school.
When she was awakened to her Witch abilities, she was inspired by the idea that she should be a fierce personality to fight against the Neuroi. At the time of training, her daring spirit often led her to get as close as she could to her targets, sometimes damaging her Striker unit in the collision.
Upon her commissioning as a flight lieutenant, she was assigned to the fleet to be sent to Europe, and deployed to Operation Barbarossa. Assigned to ground forces, she provided inland support from the invasion of Petersburg. In the latter part of the campaign, she was assigned to the defense of Petersburg.
During the fighting in Europe she interacted with Witches from other countries and later became a member of the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing (502nd JFW) when it was established. Although she is an uncooperative loner, she is no match for her squadron's Flight Lieutenant Pokryshkin. This is because the flight lieutenant has an image of her own sister, who was particularly kind to her when she was a little child.
In "Brave Witches"
When she hears that her comrade-in-arms, Takami Karibuchi, is to be sent to the 502nd, she is delighted to be able to fight alongside her as a partner. However, Takami is injured in a battle against the Neuroi and is repatriated to Fusō, and her little sister, Hikari Karibuchi, is assigned in her place.
Therefore, from the outset, Naoe refused to accept that Hikari could not take Takami's place and lashed out at her. However, seeing Hikari's persistent and dedicated efforts in training, she gradually opens up to her, even though she cannot be honest with her, and eventually calls her a partner.
