Overview
Nikka Edvardine Katajainen, known as 'Nipa', is a Witch in the World Witches series and one of the main characters in the 2016 anime Brave Witches.
She is a close friend of Hikari Karibuchi, the protagonist, and a Flying Ace serving in the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing. She is one of a group of three (four) nicknamed the 'Break Witches' because she often breaks equipment.
Personality
She has a boyish appearance and a black-and-white personality. She is forward-looking and too straight-forward, and is blind to her surroundings. She is cheerful and sociable, but has trouble reading the room.
She wants to do her best for her homeland and works very hard to get things done. On the other hand, her overly straightforward personality makes her unpopular with superiors and she is often considered to have a bad attitude.
She has a special magical idiosyncrasy, and through a synergistic effect with the healing magic of her familiar, she is able to heal even minor injuries in no time at all. By circulating magical power within her own body, she easily survives a crash that would normally kill her, surprising everyone around her.
She was born in Helsinki, the capital of Suomus, and when her powers as a witch emerged, she entered training school and was trained as a non-commissioned officer cadet.
At this time, she had already shown signs of 'unlucky', and had suffered several total losses in her training striker units. However, it has never developed into a situation involving fellow cadets or fatal serious injuries.
After graduation, she was appointed sergeant and assigned to the 3rd Flight, 24th Squadron.
Her colleagues at this time include Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen, Suoms number one flying ace, and Hanna Wind, the same number two.
She and Hanna are so similar in appearance that they might be sisters, and through their experiences in one battle they have formed a strong friendship.
In her first battle, she shot down a Neuroi, but was hit by a bullet, damaging her engine and sending her back to airbase on the verge of crashing. After that, she often suffered damage from being hit by bullets and trouble with the Striker Unit during testing.
One of the reasons for these problems was her daring spirit, and her method of warfare, in which she continued to attack without taking shields into account. Another factor was that, for some reason, she encountered Neuroi everywhere she went and was often involved in more battles than she should have been.
Her superiors had difficulty in dealing with the witch who destroyed equipment even though she had achieved good results (because Suomus relied on imports to procure Striker units), and at one time had her clean out the hangars even though she was a flying ace.
At one point, she was stationed at the Joroinen Observatory.
In early winter 1943, she was invited to join the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing (502JFW) 'Brave Witches' in Petersburg. Together with Waltrud Krupinski and Naoe Kanno, who were also invited to the same unit and were known as 'striker unit breakers', they became known as the 'Break Witches'.
She is a skilled mushroom hunter and is able to identify poisonous mushrooms.
When Hikari Karibuchi was posted to the 502nd in the autumn of 1944, sympathetic Nipa was concerned about Hikari, who had come to the frontline of the fierce battle instead of her elder sister, and recognised her as a comrade since the very beginning. She often took care of Hikari in various ways, and when Hikari caught a cold, she tried to make Hikari pleased by preparing for the Festival of Saturnalia in secret.
She was often scolded by Aleksandra I. Pokryshkin, the squadron's combat commander, for breaking her Striker unit, but they reconciled after an incident in the fighting in the Petersburg city area.
