Nijika Ijichi (伊地知虹夏, Ijichi Nijika) is a character in the manga Bocchi the Rock! and is the drummer of the four-piece rock band "Kessoku Band".
She is in her second year of high school at the start of the story (she moves up to third year in high school in the story) and is the oldest in the band along with Ryo, but is the shortest in the band in height.
Personality
She is a cheerful and energetic leader of the band, and a sensible person who follows the other band members around. Despite her disapproval of the band's name "Kessoku Band" ('The Unity Band'), she is the one who cares most about the unity of the band.
She lost her mother in a car accident when she was nine years old and her father was always away, so she grew up with her sister Seika Ijichi as her only family. When she was unable to recover from the shock of her mother's death, she was taken to a live-house by Seika and saw Seika singing in a band, which made her yearn to be in a band. Seeing Nijika like this, Seika quit the band and started the live-house STARRY. Therefore, Nijika has a strong attachment to STARRY as 'a place that my sister built for me' and says that her dream is to make STARRY more famous by becoming a popular band for her sister's sake.
She says that she chose to play drums instead of guitar like her sister because she "liked the drums for their loud sound".
So, together with her childhood friend Ryou, she tries to start a band.
However, the guitarist suddenly disappears from the band, so when she walks down the street to find a new guitarist, she discovers a heartbroken guitar girl, Hitori, in a park. Thus, together with her best friend Ryo, new guitarist Hitori and Ikuyo Kita, who came back to the band via Hitori, they form the band of her dream, Kessoku Band.
She is the emotional support person who has rescued each of the other members from their mental doldrums, and as a result has become a kind of 'keystone of the unity of the band'. She recruits Ryou, who had lost her passion for music after leaving her previous band, and reminds her of the fun of being in a band; she pulls Hitori, who had been mentally trapped to the point of a social withdrawal, thinking that she no longer wants to go to school, into the band and gives her the chance to change; and she also worried about rather than blamed Ikuyo who left the band like she was running away, and warmly welcomed her back when she returned, tormented by self-doubt and self-loathing.
While Hitori and Ryou are all low in life skills, she is exceptionally high and dexterous in many ways. She is also a good cook. She also creates logos for the band and edits videos. She also manages the band's money.
Differences in media
In terms of detailed characterisation, the original manga and the anime version have slightly different personalities.
In the anime version, she does not deny or reject Hitori's severe negative attitude, but praises and encourages her little mental growth and supports her meticulously, depicting her kind and warm (and sometimes motherly) personality. Many fans have called her like an angel.
Similarly in the original manga, a former colleague of Seika's, a clerk at a music shop, named her the 'Archangel of Shimokitazawa', in contrast to Seika, who was called the 'Demon King of Ochanomizu'.
On the other hand, scenes such as her 'meticulous support for Hitori' and 'waking up early in the morning to make her bento with great skill' are original depictions from the anime. In the original work, she is a character who rather casually makes a straightforward argument with a straight face, and there is a scene in which she uses a wrestling move on Ryo.
In both the manga and the anime, she is the same in that she has the most common sense and balanced thinking, despite being surrounded by members full of oddballs: Hitori, who is a gloomy person from the bottom up; Ryou, who is a hardcore weirdo; and Ikuyo, whose head is unscrewed when it comes to Ryou...
