Overview編集

PTT (批踢踢實業坊, Professional Technology Temple) is the largest online bulletin board system in Taiwan. Currently, the number of registered users has reached about 1.5 million, with 150,000 people logging in at the same time during peak hours, and there are more than 20,000 signboards (equivalent to 2ch boards), with more than 20,000 threads created and more than 500,000 comments posted every day.

It is said to be the largest in Taiwan and the largest in the Sinophone world. In Japan, it is sometimes referred to as "Taiwan's 2ch.". In fact, there was a separate anonymous bulletin board called "Taiwan 2ch/T 2ch" with almost the same specifications as 2ch. Although the characteristics of the users and their affinity for subcultures are similar, PTT is more dominant in terms of its influence on the real world, especially through the mass media.

In order to post, you need to register as a member, and the PTT administrator knows your personal information as well as your ISP information. For this reason, anonymity is limited compared to 2ch. In June 2019, the name of the country was displayed along with the IP.

Boards編集

C_Chat編集

C_Chat (希洽板, 西洽板) also known as the otaku board is currently one of the largest boards in PTT, with hundreds of articles per day and often in the top 10 or even top 5 in terms of popularity.

The board centers around ACG (animation, comics, games and related peripherals) with many of the popular terms used in PTT originating from this board.

Marginalman Board編集

The Marginalman Board (邊緣人板) provides a space for socially marginalized people (called 邊緣人, Marginal) and sub cultural groups to communicate freely, with topics not limited to any issues.

WomenTalk編集

WomenTalk (女板, 女孩板) also known as the girl board is a discussion board for women, regardless of any field of topics and issues, can be discussed and published here.

Regarding the right of men to post and discuss on this board, this board of course also welcomes, but if the board users reported or the board owner found that any attack, slander, discrimination against women or harassment of female board members of the comments and behavior, will be immediately punished by two weeks bucketed (a term for banning). If a newly registered id is found to be haunting the board, the id will be punished by permanent immersion in the bucket.

Controversy編集

PTT users tend to speak in a very vulgar language. The vulgar language has been a public concern with people believing that it would affect the behavior of the users. Some have stated no concern believing that if it doesn't affect the user's real life there is nothing to be worried about.

Despite what people believe in there has been a long list of controversy surrounding PTT. Due to it's semi-anonymous nature users tend to be very open with there opinions. Many of these are deemed extremism or undesirable with many users abusing their anonymity. Because of this there have been many acts of cyberbullying, falling into hate speech.

Islamic Association of Taiwan編集

The Islamic Association of Taiwan (Traditional: 台灣伊斯蘭協會; Simplified: 台湾伊斯兰协会), a Muslim organization in Taiwan has publicly criticized and protested against PTT for letting their users post fake news, abuse of anonymity as well as posting hate speech about Muslims, calling them a “garbage religion” or saying “Muslims are trash”.
