Overview
General Reitaisai Festivals
Reitaisai (例大祭), also known as Reisai (例祭), is a festival held on a specific day at a shrine, often in connection with a deity or person related to the shrine in question. When referring to an individual Reitaisai festival rather than a specific shrine festival, the name of the shrine is combined with the name of the festival.
As the name implies, Reitaisai (annual grand festival) are also festivals, and in addition to those conducted internally by shrine priests, they are often shared with the general public. The content of the rituals is diverse, and each annual festival has its own characteristics.
For example, the portable shrines (the means of transportation for gods and other deities) and the dedication of kagura (Shinto music and dance), are diverse, as are the personalities of the deities and people enshrined at each festival.
Some festivals are clearly defined in the calendar in terms of dates, which are linked to the gods or people associated with the festivals. Some Reitaisai festivals are held not only on one day, but also over several days, and there is a wide variety in accordance with the meaning of the shrine and the festival.
