The SA-2 Guideline (S-75 Dvina/Desna/Volkhov/Volga) is a Soviet-built Surface to Air Missile system. The SA-2 was the first SAM to be used in combat when a PLA SA-2 shot down a ROCAF Canberra aircraft in 1959. In 1960, a Soviet Air Defence Forces SA-2 was used to shoot down Gary Francis Powers' U-2C.
During the Vietnam War, the SA-2 caused heavy losses for US aircraft during the conflict. While not being as dangerous as AAA, the SA-2 still accounted for more aircraft losses than MiG aircraft.
In the Six Day War, Israeli aircraft were able to avoid being shot down by the SA-2 by flying at low-level. The SA-2 also saw action in the War of Attrition and the 1973 October War (Ramadan/Yom Kippur War).
In the Gulf War, SA-2s were able to down a USAF F-15E as well as a US Navy F-14A+ from VF-103.
