The MIM-104 Patriot is an American built mobile Surface-to-air missile. Reaching initial operational capacity in 1984 with the US Army, the Patriot was exported to several countries including Japan, Israel, Germany, Taiwan, and most recently Ukraine.
Patriot's first use in combat saw it go up against Iraqi variants of the Scud missile in the 1991 Gulf War. Its against the Scud in that conflict is controversial to this day, with the number of Scuds downed still being debated.
In the 2003 Iraq War, several Patriots were responsible for friendly-fire incidents, downing an RAF Tornado and a US Navy F/A-18C from VFA-195, killing the cew in both incidents.
