The Vietnam War (ベトナム戦争 in Japanese) or the Second Indochina War (known in Vietnam as the Resistance War against America to Save the Nation or simply the American War) was an major proxy that lasted between 1955 and 1975 in several stages. It is one of the most controversial wars in the history of the United States.
History
While the war began simply as a guerrilla war in 1955 between North and South Vietnam (with the US only sending token support followed by several other nations), it soon evolved into a major air and guerrilla war after the Gulf of Tonkin Incident in 1964.
After major public supported waned and running on a promise of removing the US from the war, In 1973; President Richard Nixon ordered US troops to leave Vietnam. In 1975, North Vietnam successfully defeated the by now weak and demoralized South Vietnamese military and reunified the country.
