In April 1982, Argentina invaded the U.K. administered Falkland Islands. As a result, a Royal Navy task force which included 2 Aircraft carriers was ordered to sail to retake the islands.
A detachment of RAF Avro Vulcan bombers that were forward deployed to Ascension island were to be the first to take part in the war when on 1 May 1982, one of them bombed Port Stanley airfield. The resulting conflict led to the British retaking the Island by late June 1982.
