Overview
Splatoon 2 (スプラトゥーン2, Supuratūn Tsū) was released on the Nintendo Switch on Friday, July 21, 2017. New weapons and stages where added to this title through continuous updates and public contests. Prior to its release, an advance trial shooting event and an eve party were also held.
Since September 19, 2018, online play has been unavailable without a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
Every time Nintendo Switch Online is available for free, a special demo version will be available (special demo versions are available for 19 to 20 years).
For the main specifications, see the previous Splatoon.
Game Modes
Turf War
Just like the game before the regular match follows the rules of Turf War, in which players compete to see how much area they have covered.
This is the symbolic mode of the Splatoon series, and will be the first thing you will play in this game as well.
New stages added in this title as well as old stages that have been redesigned will appear.
Ranked Battle
Starting from Ver. 3.0.0, the number of stages in each rule is fixed around 8 stages per month.
In the current Ranked Battle, each rule has its own rank.
It is up to you to master the rules you are good at or overcome the rules you are not so good at.
The rank meter has undergone a significant change: the rank meter and its value do not drop when losing, but the rank meter cracks every certain number of times, and if it reaches the acceptable line (OK line) with a total of four cracks, it is returned to before that line and maintained; if it does not reach it, it is demoted.
It is easier to maintain than the previous one, in part because of the mixture of old and new players, and perhaps in consideration of the difference in ability.
In addition, when a player loses a game due to an error or some other reason, the negative change in the rank meter is almost eliminated.
S+ is now limited to 99 (currently 10), but each promotion is a step up from Splatoon to Splatoon 2, so players now have to play for a longer period of time in order to reach the highest rank (although there are still players who have reached the highest rank in all rules in less than a month after the release of the game).
Hero Mode
The Hero Mode (ヒーローモード, Hīrō Mōdo) is back, this time with a story mode that can be played offline by a single player.
Just as peace is restored to the squid world, the Octarian Army comes back to steal the city's energy source, the giant catfish, and at the same time, Marie of the popular idols of Squid Sisters also goes missing.
Callie, a member of the Squid Sisters and Marie's childhood friend and cousin, notices that Octo Valley is empty and senses that DJ Octavio and other Octarians are responsible for the series of incidents.
