Overview
Squid Sisters, known as Sea O'Colors (シオカラーズ, Shiokarāzu) in Japan are a idol group consisting of the easy-going Callie and the relaxed Marie. Despite them being called Squid Sisters in English, the two are not really sisters but cousins.
They are active as idols in Inkopolis, a town where inklings gather.
They are well received for their loose talk and friendly personality that they wave to fans watching from outside while taking a break in the studio.
In the game, Inkopolis News, which is played when the game is launched, the two provides information on the current stage and updates. They also serves as the hosts during Splatfest.
Based on the content of the festivals and the exchange in Inkopolis News, there seems to be a slight difference in the personalities of the domestic and overseas versions of the game as performers.
For example, while Callie is a singer and Marie is a dancer in overseas festivals, in their solo performances, Callie moves around and Marie mainly sings, etc.
Background
Hailing from the Calamari County (Calamari Region), they are cousins that are the same age.
Wining at Inkopolis' first annual Youth Folk-Singing Contest an early age, their natural singing ability was recognized when they moved to Inkopolis, where they made their debut with City of Color after a long training period. Although their career did not take off for a while, their fourth single Calamari Inkantation, a modernized version of a local folk song, became a big hit and brought them to their current position.
Etymology
Group's Name
Their Japanese name Sea O'Colors (シオカラーズ, Shiokarāzu) is a pun on shiokara, a Japanese dish made from fermented squid viscera, sea, and colors. It is unknown why many places outside Japan uses the sister tile in Squid Sisters. Some even change the squid part but keeps the sister part.
Members
When their names are put together, it looks a lot like the word calamari (Callie + Marie), a Italian squid dish literally meaning squid. During the final boss in Splatoon 2, Marie never realized this until saying the word out loud.
Callie
Callie can be short for Caroline, meaning beautiful (or strong) woman, or Calista, from the Greek for goddess of beauty.
Her Japanese name Aori (アオリ, Aori) comes from the Japanese spelling of bigfin reef squid (アオリイカ, aori-ika).
Marie
Marie is French for star of the sea or the Egyptian for beloved.
Her Japanese name Hotaru (ホタル, Hotaru) comes from the Japanese spelling of firefly squid (アオリイカ, hotaru-ika).
Catchphrase
They are known for their signature line, "Staaaay fresh!", know in Japan as "Squid, best regards!" (イカ、よろしく!, Ika, yoroshiku!). The ika (squid) could be a play on it's kanji meaning the following (以下, ika).
Fresh in stay fresh is used like how cool is used within English slang. Being fresh is the overall goal for kids in Splatoon.
