Overview
Off the Hook, known as Tentacles (テンタクルズ, Tentakuruzu) in Japan first appeared at the end of the Splatoon 2 Direct broadcast on July 6, 2017.
Based in Inkopolis Square, a new town where Inklings gather, they are a fast-growing unit that captivates young squids with their one-of-a-kind music and characters.
They are in charge of hosting the news and festivals, replacing the Squid Sisters, which appeared in the previous game.
While Squid Sisters was an idol group, this group is more artist-oriented, with a hip-hop style of music for the younger generation.
After finishing their news reports, they end with the signature line, "Don't get cooked... Stay off the hook!", in Japan as "Ink it up... Tentacle!!" (ぬりたく~る…テンタクル!!, Nuritakūru... Tentakuru!!)
One of the members, Marina Ida, was an Octarian, the sworn enemy of the squids in the first Splatoon game.
How did she, an octopus whose existence is known only to a limited number of people among the squids, form a pop idol group with Pearl the squid and become a popular artist in Inkopolis Square? Well the whole story was revealed in Octo Expansion.
Since the icon that represents her proudly resembles an octopus, it appears that she is not hiding the fact that she is an Octarian.
Etymology
Group's Name
Fig 1. English name, Fig 2. Japanese name, Fig 3. Squid language name.
Off the hook is a term that can be use to describe something as "cool". Hook itself can be a tool for catching fish or a song with a catchy tune. Tentacles doesn't seem to have much meaning besides that tentacles are part of Inkling and Octoling anatomy.
Members
Marina
Marina is a feminine form of Marinus, Latin for of the sea, and is also derived from the name of a dock for boats.
In Japan her name is Marine (マリネ, Marine) with the word itself being short for marination.
Ida or Iida (イイダ, Īda) is in both her English and Japanese name, the word itself is a Japanese surname and is close to webfoot octopus (イイダコ, īdako) in Japanese.
Ida in both versions are her family name (last name) but in Japanese her family name is placed first as Iida = Marine (イイダ=マリネ, Īda Marine) despite it being written in katakana (one of the Japanese's alphabets where names are usually listed as this: given name, family name).
But the double hyphen ("=") implies that Ida is her family name (last name). She gets refer as Ida in the Japanese version.
Pearl
Pearl's name literally refers to pearls, a hard glistening object seen very valuable, this name was most likely chosen to match the princess title she uses (literally being her name in Japanese) and her color theming is what most people think of a pearl color is.
Hime in her Japanese name Hozuki Hime (ホウズキ・ヒメ, Hōzuki Hime) literally means princess, part of her design is based off of Japanese princess. It is also close to Japanese word for northern pygmy squid (ヒメイカ, hime-ika). Hozuki is also close to a Japanese word, that being colossal squid (ダイオウホウズキイカ , daiōhōzukīka, lit. giant hozuki squid).
