The Sukhoi Su-17 Fitter is an improved version of the Su-7 Fitter equipped with variable-geometry wings. The Su-17 was exported to other countries as the Su-20 and Su-22. In 1981, two Su-22s of the Libyan Air Force engaged two F-14A Tomcats of US Navy squadron VF-41, with the Tomcats shooting both of them down. Iraqi Su-22s were used during the Iran-Iraq War but most were destroyed during the 1991 Gulf War
