Overview
The Silent Service (沈黙の艦隊 - Chinmoku no Kantai) is a Manga written and illustrated by Kaiji Kawaguchi between 1988 and 1996. The Manga was adapted into an OVA by Studio Sunrise in 1995 followed by two more episodes between 1997 to 1998. In 2023, a Live-action film was released.
Plot
A Nuclear Attack Submarine built by Japan and the United States known as the USS Seabat rebels against the US Pacific Fleet, with its captain Shiro Kaieda declaring the submarine to be the Independent state of Yamato. The US Navy (and in the original manga the Soviet Navy as well) in response attempt to prevent Kaieda and the Yamato from reaching the UN in New York, only to fail.
Changes between versions
Many changes occurred with the OVA and Film due to when they were released.
OVA changes
- Soviet Navy omitted (Cold War had ended already).
- USS Midway replaced by USS Enterprise (due to Midway being retired).
Film changes
- USS Carl Vinson replaced by the USS Ronald Reagan (The Ronald Reagan being the US 7th Fleet carrier in 2023).
- The Yamato's design being changed (due to being portrayed by an actual JMSDF submarine).
