Overview編集

X (エックス, Ekkusu) is a shoot 'em up using wireframe graphics on the Game Boy, and is an ambitious attempt to reproduce 3D space on the Game Boy's CPU specs without a custom chip.

Although X was initially treated as an action game, it is in fact an shoot 'em up by all accounts.

It was developed by Nintendo R&D1 and the British developer Argonaut Games, whose 3D shoot 'em up technology was later used in Star Fox.

The game is based on a mission-based system, and the number of medals earned is required to complete a new mission or continue.

Story編集

The year is XXXX of the cosmic century. Due to the population explosion of the terrestrial human race, human beings, who needed to migrate to a new planet, discovered a new habitat planet, Tetamus II. The benefits of an environment infinitely close to Earth and power crystals containing unknown energy gave great hope for human life on Tetamus II.

However, an alien army, seeking to conquer the universe, also has its eyes on Tetamus II and begins an invasion to turn it into a military base. Humanity is drawn into an epic battle over Tetamus II with the alien army.

The pilot of the Space Tank VIXIV leaves Earth for Tetamus II, the site of the fierce battle.

Sequel編集

A sequel titled X-Scape , X-Returns (エックス リターンズ) in Japan, and 3D Space Tank in the PAL region, distributed in 2010 on Nintendo DSiWare for the Nintendo DSi. The world was built from wireframe by low polygons.

Q-Games, a company founded by former Argonaut Software staff, was involved in the development of the game.

This time, the game is closer to Star Fox, as the player moves not only through one planet, but also through a group of planets that exist in the galaxy.

The controls are specialized for FPS-type shooting, and VIXIV can be enhanced by accumulating experience (score).

Although the game is for the DSi, it can also be played on the Nintendo 3DS. Although the analog input of the slide pad is not supported, it can be used, and the controls are a good match.

This was the first time an X game released for other regions. The previous game was going to be released under the tiled Lunar Chase for North American but was cancelled due to the Game Boy being seen mainly as a children console with the game being too advanced for them.

Story編集

After defeating the alien army and bringing peace to Tetamus II, you set off on a wandering journey to the edge of a galaxy you had not yet seen.

Twenty years later, you awaken from your cold sleep to return home and are reunited with your commander, the hero who fought off the aliens with you, but there are unexpected changes that have occurred over the past 20 years and a new battle awaits you.
