Overview
Nintendo Research & Development No. 1 Department (任天堂開発第一部, Nintendō Kaihatsu Daiichi Bu), often abbreviated as Nintendo R&D1, was Nintendo's oldest video game development team and was headed by Gunpei Yokoi. The most notable things developed by R&D1 are the video game consoles Game Boy and Virtual Boy, many arcade games, the Game & Watch series as well as the Super Mario Land series and even the character Wario.
Despite being one of Nintendo's oldest video game development team the original R&D did make a few arcade tiles in the 70's.
