Character History

Personality, and his role in the game

A student in Tokyo Denki University and also the founder of the Future Gadget Laboratory (未来ガジェット研究所 Mirai Gadget Kenkyuujo). A self-proclaimed mad scientist and often refers to himself under the alias of Kyouma Hououin (鳳凰院凶真 Hououin Kyouma), which is also the name he uses to introduce himself to other people. Mayuri and Daru refer to him by the nickname Okarin (オカリン), a portmanteau of his surname and given name. He is highly dellusional, arrogant, and self centered. He always potray himself to be constantly chased by his made up fictional organization, and most of the time seen talking to himself on the phone. He loves drinking Dr.Pepper, and claims it to be a drink for the intelligent people. He is always seen wearing a white lab coat, commenting that every scientists should wear a lab coat to prove that they are one.

Despite being arrogant and self centered, he can be a pushover when pressured and dare not raise his hand against people who are bigger size than him. He is also kind and considerate sometimes, and thinks of his lab members as friends, and is especially protective of Mayuri Shiina, who he considers her to be a sister figure. Though he is not as smart compared to Kurisu Makise or Itaru Hashida, he spends most of his time on thinking up on various inventions, even though most of inventions ended up pointless, his eighth invention, the Phone Microwave (Name Subject to Change) is proven to be an invention that will bring revolution to the science field. His dellusional attitude also gave him the habit to give names to objects, events and people. Especially nicknames, which annoy Makise Kurisu due to his constant attempt on giving her different nicknames.

During the course of the game he is the only character who jumped through different timelines with his creation, experiencing different blizzare phenomenons along the way. His repeated experiments on D-Mails can be seen as playing with fire, as he knows no consequences of experimenting with cause and effect, and spends half of the time fixing and patching the timeline back to the way it was. However, by doing so he realize the importance of losing something dear to his heart, which completely rebuke his personal desire on "chaos and disorder".

Difference Between Anime and the Visual Novel

Episode 1

• The scene where Okarin met Kurisu again is different in order : In the visual novel, he was shocked to see Kurisu alive, only to check on Daru's handphone later that his message has been cut into 3 different parts, and got send one week earlier. But in the anime, the order is opposite.

Episode 5

• While this is not shown in the game, Okarin had a small game with Kurisu on Rainet Access Battlers, where he lost to Kurisu badly.

Episode 11

• The scene where Okarin checking on both Mayuri and Kurisu is done in hillarious effect : even with the e-mail threat he just brush it off nonchalantly soon after, but in the anime, Okarin remained panic and afraid throughout.
