The F-4J Phantom II is a variant of the F-4 Phantom II built originally for the US Navy. Being an improved version of the F-4B built for air to air combat instead of interception, the F-4J had the newer J79-GE-10 engines, the AN/APG-59 pulse-doppler radar coupled and the AN/AWG-10 for look-down shoot-down capability.
Other additions included larger landing gear, a slatted tailplane and zero-zero ejection seats. The F-4J also has no IRST sensor under the nose unlike the F-4B.
The most well known F-4J was BuNo 155800 which as Showtime 100 (NG-100) shot down down three MiGs on 10 May 1972 before being it was shot down. The crew (Lt. Randy Cunningham and Lt.JG Willie Dricoll) were rescued and became the only Navy aces of the Vietnam War.
