Overview

Clockwork Knight is a series of side-scrolling action platformers with a prominent fantasy toy theme. Developed by Sega for their Sega Saturn system, the games take advantage of the hardware's graphical capabilities with fluid and lively pre-rendered digitized 2D sprites of 3D character models, as well as using 3D polygons to depict the game's levels and boss characters. The player controls the wind-up toy knight Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III (shortened to "Pepper" in US and EU releases) as he ventures throughout a large house in search of the kidnapped princess Chelsea, who sings a song each night that brings the toys to life. The areas he travels through are based on rooms of a house (kid's room, bathroom, attic, etc.) and have level gimmicks relevant to the room's theme (e.g., in "Kevin's Room" there are electric toy trains that Pepper can ride on when he inserts a battery).

There are three titles in the series, with one of them being a compilation of the first two games.

  • Clockwork Knight (12/9/1994 in Japan, 5/11/1995 in the US, 7/8/1995 in Europe)

The first game in the series and a launch title for the system in all major regions.

  • Clockwork Knight 2 (7/28/1995 in Japan, 10/27/1995 in Europe, 2/17/1996 in the US)

The second game in the series. It features many additions over its predecessor, such as collectible playing cards and stages taking place on the back of Pepper's donkey steed, Barobaro. The US version has additional modes taken from Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro (see below).

  • Clockwork Knight: Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro (12/15/1995 in Japan)

A Japan-exclusive compilation of the first two games, released around the Japanese new year. It features a boss rush mode as well as a movie viewer that lets the player watch the various cinema scenes that play in each game. The US release of Clockwork Knight 2 is built from this version, with the only changes being translated text and the first game being taken out.

Aside from general translation, there are notable changes made to the US and European versions of the games. The most apparent changes are that the boss characters have more health and the removal of special character conversations before each level, where Pepper's friends and family give him advice.

Characters

  • Sir Tongara de Pepperouchau III (トンガラ・ド・ペパルーチョ三世)

The protagonist of the game and the youngest wind-up knight of the Pepperouchau clan. He is kind but very careless and seeks to win Chelsea's hand in marriage. He carries a sword-shaped key that serves as his means of offense.

  • Princess Chelsea (チェルシー)

The princess of Toyland who lives in a beautiful music clock. She is kind and gentle but has a secret stubborn side to her, and dislikes people who are late. Her voice has the power to bring the rest of the toys to life.

  • Soltia (ソルティア)

A feisty perfume bottle who is infatuated with Pepper. She runs a casino in between worlds where the player can spend coins to play roulette and possibly win extra lives.

  • Sir Ginger (ジンジャー)

A silver wind-up knight who is Pepper's rival. He is a professional swordsman who also desires to become Chelsea's husband. He is playable in the "Bosses Galore!" mode in Pepperouchau no Fukubukuro and the US version of Clockwork Knight 2, where he runs faster and has better attack range than Pepper.

  • Prunchau (プルンチョ)

A wooden top who has served the Pepperouchau family since its beginning. He keeps a watchful eye over Pepper and provides useful hints to his master.

  • Barobaro (バロバロ)

Pepper's donkey, made from a glass bottle atop a wooden basket on wheels. He is rickety but also very loyal, and provides transport for his master in certain levels in Clockwork Knight 2.

  • Le Bon (ル・ボン)

A cheerful rubber ball who is Ginger's companion. He often gives away the locations to secret level exits, and in Clockwork Knight 2 he can be found and challenged to a footrace, with a health item as the winning prize.

  • Silver (シルバー)

Ginger's steed, a clothesbrush-shaped horse. He values tidiness and has a snobby attitude, as he considers Pepper and Barobaro to be an inferior pair compared to Ginger and himself.

  • Oneon de Pepperouchau (オネオン・ド・ペパルーチョ)

Pepper's father, an effeminate knight dressed in magenta armor. He is a skilled poet and often worries about his son a lot.

  • Garluch de Pepperouchau (ガールック・ド・ペパルーチョ)

Pepper's honorable grandfather. He was a big adventurer in his younger days, and has recounted his experiences to his grandson. Garluch is missing for much of the series due to getting lost in the "Clock Tower" area of the second game, but is revealed to have a big connection to the main story.

  • Pa Zur (パ・ズール)

A sliding picture puzzle who serves as Ginger's wise teacher. He practices Zen doctrine and sometimes tells koans to Ginger.
