VF-161 Chargers was a US Navy fighter squadron that existed until 1986. The Chargers were assigned to CVW-5 in 1971 and took part in two Vietnam War cruises. In 1973, VF-161 and the rest of CVW-5 was rebased at NAF Atsugi in Japan. In 1986, VF-161 and sister squadron VF-151 retired the F-4S Phantom II and for the United States. After transitioning to the F/A-18A Hornet, VF-161 was re-designated VFA-161.
