Overview
VFA-27 Royal Maces (formerly Chargers) is a US Navy Strike Fighter squadron that succeeded VA-27.
History
The squadron (while assigned to CVW-15) in 1991 had transitioned to the F/A-18A Hornet and renamed itself from VA-27 Royal Maces to VFA-27 Chargers. In 1992-1993, the VFA-27 took part in Operation Southern Watch as well as a strike in Southern Iraq. In 1994, the squadron took part in operations near North Korea during that country's Nuclear crisis.
After CVW-15 was decommissioned, VFA-27 swapped out their F/A-18As for F/A-18C (N) Night Attack Hornets. In July 1996, they moved to CVW-5 and the USS Independence CV-62, replacing the attack squadron VA-115. They also changed their name back to the Royal Maces. In 1998, VFA-27 moved to the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 with the rest of CVW-5. The squadron currently flies the F/A-18E Super Hornet.
