Overview

Knuckles the Echidna (ナックルズ・ザ・エキドゥナ, Nakkuruzu za Ekiduna), sometimes nicknamed as Knux, Knucklehead, and Knucks is one of the regular characters in the Sonic series, he is Sonic's rival or companion depending on the situation. He lives on Angel Island where he is the guardian of the Master Emerald.

Appearance

Knuckles is an anthropomorphic echidna with red fur that covers most of his body with some white fur on the top of chest that looks like a crescent-shaped patch. The crescent shape was was originally going to be a Nike logo as a brand deal with Nike and Sega. Despite never happening, the patch being like a crescent moon works as a contrast to the peach skin on Sonic's front torso being like a sun.

Reception

Knuckles over the years developed somewhat of a meme status, specifically in the west. One popular one is the & Knuckles meme, coming from the from the title Sonic & Knuckles the meme usually shows crossover works with Knuckles or using the & Knuckles title on a game's title screen, or as a joke on games stating their new editions on the box cover. Usually as bizarre photoshop edits.

This meme came back to the games themselves with Sonic Mania where an unlockable mode titled & Knuckles have Knuckles be an AI partner like Tails. If you wanted to, you play as Knuckles while having another Knuckles be your partner.

In the English version of Sonic Adventure, he says "OH NO!" with almost no emotion in his voice, which has become the talk and jokes for western fans. This can been seen later carried on with as one of the quotes from the Ugandan Knuckles meme. Ugandan Knuckles, a short goofy looking version of Knuckles was popular in 2017, where people in VRChat used the character as an avatar and raiding many spaces saying his catchphrases and sounds. From this the meme became hated fast and been under accusations of racial stereotypes for a few reasons.
