Overview

Sonic & Knuckles (ソニック&ナックルズ Sonikku & Nakkuruz) is the second half of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It has a special shape among the cartridges for the Mega Drive and Sega Genesis to accommodate the lock-on system described below.

In this title, Knuckles became a fully-fledged playable character. The action of Knuckles is very different and the route the stage takes changes as well.

The time line between Sonic's version and Knuckles' version is different, so the last boss battle is different from Sonic's.

The save function is not available for this title alone, so if you want to play while saving, you need to play the full version of the game, which is described later.

This is the last classic Sonic game for the Mega Drive in Japan, and players there had to wait until Sonic Generations before they can use Classic Sonic again.

Overseas, Sonic 3D Blast was released two years after this title on the Mega Drive and Sega Genesis. In Japan, only the Sega Saturn version was released.

Synopsis

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic crashed Dr. Eggman's great fortress Death Egg into a volcano on a floating island. However, the Death Egg was not completely destroyed, and it was only a matter of time before it was revived by Dr. Eggman.

When Sonic arrives at Mushroom Hill, a mushroom-infested forest deep within the floating island, he is about to run out to stop the resurrection of the Death Egg again when he sees Knuckles leaving through a door hidden in the bushes.

After Knuckles left, Sonic entered the door and found a shiny special ring, the Super Ring. What in the world is this ring......? Sonic's curiosity got the better of him, and as soon as he touched the Super Ring, a high-pitched sound sent him flying into an unfamiliar space.

When Sonic looked up at the altar, he saw a huge Chaos Emerald, the Master Emerald, in the center of the altar.

The mystery hidden on the floating island, Dr. Eggman's plot, and Sonic's confrontation with his rival Knuckles, Sonic's adventure has only just begun.
