Overview編集

Dr. Eggman (ドクター・エッグマン, Dokutā Egguman) is a self-proclaimed "evil genius scientist". He is constantly thwarted by Sonic in his plot to transform the world into his own utopia, Eggmanland.

As his name suggests, he is characterized by his plump, egg-like physique, protruding mustache, and his booming laugh, "Ho, ho, ho, ho!".

Although he is known as Eggman, his real name is Ivo Robotnik (イヴォ・ロボトニック, Ivo Robotonikku). According to Orbot, Eggman was a nickname Sonic came up with to make fun of him, and he took the name before he was made fun of. In the Sonic Riders series, he also used it as the name of the company he runs to develop Extreme Gear (which seems to be a different company from MeteorTech, also run by Eggman).

In fact, he was called Dr. Robotnik in the early foreign versions of the series, but after Sonic Adventure he was referred to as Eggman, as he is in Japan (although in the English version of Sonic Generations, there is a scene where Classic Tails shouts "Dr. Robotnik!" at Classic Eggman)

Many years this started debates in the west on what his real name is. It wasn't till TailsTube and Sonic Frontiers that it was confirm Ivo Robotnik is his real name.

Conception and Creation編集

Like Sonic, he was originally planned to replace Alex Kid as one of Sega's signature characters. The motif of the character was Theodore Roosevelt in his pajamas but was stated the likeness was unintentional. He was originally going to be the protagonist but was rejected till the development team revisited the character as the antagonist.

Personality編集

He has a genius-level intellect of an IQ of 300.

This high intellect shows by his robotics and mechanical engineering knowledge being quite deep, and he can build everything from small animals to life-size combat mecha, a large fleet leading a giant battleship, and even a huge satellite space station by himself (or accompanied by construction robots). In the anime Sonic X, he demonstrated on TV his astonishing scientific ability to mechanize and repair the moon, which had been half destroyed by the Eclipse Cannon, in just 10 minutes. In addition, it was even able to control the orbit of the moon like a satellite, but Eggman's misuse of this technology was later discovered, and the antenna of the power unit was destroyed by Knuckles and its function was stopped.

He refers to himself as Dr. Eggman, as if he were a villain, and has created symbols and weapons in the shape of his own face, suggesting that he is a narcissist. This can be shown by him being too overconfident in his own brain and his plans are not well thought out, and always loses to Sonic. Despite being a very intelligence man, his ego can get away from his goals. However, even though he loses, he always rises to the occasion, and his perseverance is, in a sense, tenacious and persistent.

It is a mystery where he gets his funding and materials (in Sonic Heroes, when Vector saw Eggman's fleet, he muttered, "I bet he's really rich"). In some games, he is depicted as starting up a company or making money, but he has no clear source of income. On the contrary, in his recent works, he has become quite witty, saying things like, "It costs money to repair a robot".

Although his personality varies from series to series, they all have one thing in common: "He has excellent scientific powers, but he is selfish and has a bad boy side" and "He likes playing with mechanisms and doing bad things more than eating three meals a day". He is easily influenced by others, and as a result, he often fails to follow through with his plans. He is also susceptible to coaxing, and is often taken advantage of by other villains.

He is a resourceful man with an IQ commensurate with that of his allies, and he is quite cunning, not caring about the troubles of others in order to achieve his own ambitions.

On the other hand, since his ambition is world domination, he rarely uses excessive methods such as unnecessary destruction of cities, destruction of planets, and murder, and he rarely hurts the feelings of his opponents, but rather does his utmost to stop them when they lose ground to conquer. This point is also recognized by Sonic.

He is also arrogant towards his robots, and when a robot is useless, he immediately disassembles it, rebuilds it, or discards it, and this was the reason why E-102 Gamma turned on him. In particular, he is angry at Metal Sonic, even though he acted selfishly in order to defeat Sonic, but he does not dispose of it. He also treats Orbot and Cubot, which he created to kill time, sarcastically and excessively, and which are dissatisfied with him, with a certain degree of special treatment, for better or worse, as his subordinates.

In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic '06, he has been holding hostages and threatening the country and the world (in the former case, even though he was inspired by Shadow, he half-collapsed the moon with his Eclipse Cannon as an example, terrorizing people around the world). In Sonic Generations, he shows no qualms about the destruction of the world; in Sonic Colors, his character is comical, but he modifies wisps and uses them as weapons; in Sonic Forces, he uses Infinite to destroy an urban area and imprison the surviving rebellious residents in space, etc. In these works, we see Eggman acting in ways that are truly villainous, such as his descendant Eggman Nega. However, in Rise of the Wisps, an animation produced to commemorate the release of Sonic Colors Ultimate, Eggman's evil is changed from brainwashing to using the wisps' power to build them into the strongest robots, and the negated wisps are also changed to the wisps' power-sucked forms. It is mild.

In Sonic Adventure 2, he is reappraised by Sonic as an enemy, saying, "You've turned into a big time villain, doctor!", and in Last Story, he shows his resentment toward his grandfather who wants to destroy the human race for revenge and when he learns that Sonic is safe, he says, "I knew you were alive", while everyone thinks Sonic is dead.

In Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors he is portrayed as a boisterous character, and in Sonic Lost World he takes great care not to destroy a planet when absorbing its energy. His announcements at the amusement park in Sonic Colors are especially amusing.

Relationships編集

Sonic the Hedgehog編集

ソニック27周年

Eggman considers Sonic to be his greatest rival and nemesis, but Sonic sees him as nothing more than a boredom killer. Sonic himself does not dislike Eggman, although he teases him.

However, in the works from Sonic Adventure to Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and his friends often make a temporary truce with Eggman in the name of losing the foundation for building Eggman's empire (Eggmanland), as the things he tried to use often leave his hands or new enemy forces emerge. They often form a joint front, and they seem to trust each other, and Eggman often shows his feelings for Sonic even though he is trying to defeat him.

Sage編集

「ドクター、ほめてほめて」

Sage was created as an AI by Eggman to harness the technology of the Ancients in Sonic Frontiers. Sage had to put Eggman in Cyber Space to protect him from the treats of the Starfall Islands. While he was upset about being trapped in Cyber Space, he grew an attachment for her from their interactions. He started to call Sage by "her" than "it" and ended up seeing her as a daughter.

Relatives編集

Gerald Robotnik編集

Eggman's grandfather was Gerald Robotnik, a scientist once touted as the world's most brilliant mind, and is immensely respected by Eggman even though they never got to interact with each other.

Maria Robotnik編集

おやすみ

His cousin is Maria Robotnik, a girl who died 50 years ago, yet another relative he never got to interact with but seems to form a jealousy towards her due to people giving focus on her and ignoring Eggman. After making Sage who he grew an appreciation of, he wonder if Maria was anything like her.

Eggman Nega編集

A relative he have interacted with is his two hundred years in the future descendant Eggman Nega. It seems during those years Eggman's failures have ruined the family's reputation and lead to Nega growing a grudge against him. They are enemies of one another when they are not working together.
