Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Sonikku za Hejjihoggu) is the main character of the Sonic series and the mascot of Sega. The character was created as a mascot that could compete with Nintendo's iconic character, Mario, and is known as "the fastest hedgehog in history".
Appearance
Sonic is a slim anthropomorphic hedgehog with blue fur and peach skin that covers his arms, inner ears, muzzle and front torso. He had a round head and an equally round torso. He use to much shorter and had black eyes, but now is taller (along with his quills) and has green eyes.
For more details on his classic appearance refer to the article Classic Sonic.
Personality
He is a rather amazing hedgehog who likes to be free and has unshakable confidence in the face of any challenge, but he hates to be restrained, and he also hates confined spaces and places where he cannot run as he pleases, such as underwater.
His personality may make him seem cocky, but when he sees someone in trouble, he has a kind side that he cannot leave alone, and he is trusted by many of his friends. His kind side was depicted in more detail in the Sonic X anime and the picture book series released on the Wii.
Even if Dr. Eggman is their sworn enemy, they basically get along without distinction, and in fact, they are often depicted as having a certain sense of trust "in their own way," and in the animated works, that being Sonic X and Sonic Boom, they are more like bad friends or fighting friends who transcend their positions than enemies.
In the OVA version (Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie), his tone of voice was a bit stern, but since the Sonic Adventure version, he has a habit of speaking in English in the Japanese dub, and words often pop up in conversation. This is an afterthought that was added when the game was fully voiced, but the fact that the voice actor, Jun'ichi Kanemaru, is also a certified English teacher and has a fluent pronunciation helps make it a successful characterization.
Favorite Food
He loves chili dogs and his passion for them is so strong that when King Arthur or the Time Eater appears and blows up a chili dog, he worries more about the chili dog than his immediate enemies, and he becomes seriously depressed when he loses it.
In the Sonic Boom cartoon he often eats hamburgers from a restaurant called Meh Burger, but he also eats chili dogs often, and they appear throughout the cartoon.
Hobbies
His hobbies include stopping Dr. Eggman's shenanigans in his spare time and DJ-ing, and he likes fast-paced music like rock and eurobeat, making DJ mixes that puts him in a good mood, but the latter hobby has not appeared much in the recent main game, only occasionally in official illustrations.
Reception
Although he has failed to achieve his goal in Japan, and his fame has been limited, he is still extremely popular and well-known overseas, not only in games but also in guest appearances in commercials, character goods, comics, and animation. He has established a firm position among children around the world as a hero with a "cool" theme. He also appeared in the Disney film Wreck-It Ralph as a commentator explaining the rules of the game characters, and continued in a small role in the sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet.
He is also ranked 10th in the "Top 50 Most Famous Video Game Characters in History" by Guinness World Records, his previous American comic published by Archie has been recognized as the "longest running comic based on a video game", and a newly discovered gene has been named after him. In Japan, he has also solidified his position as a synonym for Sega, and has made guest and cameo appearances in other Sega games.
He is now collaborating with Nintendo's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and Smash Bros. series, and not only with Mario, but also with Yoshi and Link in Sonic Lost World where Sonic is dressed as him and explores Hyrule.
