Overview

Tails (テイルス, Teirusu), real name Miles Prower (マイルス・パウアー, Mairusu Pauā) is an anthropomorphic fox who can fly with his two tails, leading to his plural use of his nickname. Sometimes he is referred to as Tails the Fox by fans.

His real name is a pun on miles per hour which means the speed per hour including the common American mileage system, adding onto the theme of speed in the Sonic series. Yet in contrast to Sonic he creates the image of flying freely and slowly in the sky, in contrast to Sonic, who runs around the ground at the speed of sound.

Tails first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Mega Drive and Sega Genesis in 1992. He has appeared in all subsequent titles in the Sonic series with the exception of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I. Tails also had spin-off titles such as Tails Adventure and Tails' Sky Patrol, making him an indispensable character in the Sonic story.

He made his debut earlier than Amy, Knuckles, and Shadow, making him one of the oldest main characters aside from Sonic and Dr. Eggman. In the games he is one of the youngest character in the series until Cream appeared (Charmy appeared before Cream, but his age was initially unknown at the time).

Background

In the past, Tails was bullied for having two tails, but one day he met Sonic by chance and was so encouraged by Sonic's running that he began to follow him, and since then he has been using his dexterity and technical skills to support Sonic's activities. (This is shown in detail in the anime Sonic X.)

"Someday, Sonic will depend on me."

He has a dream of becoming someone that Sonic can rely on someday, but Sonic and his friends rely on Tails enough that his wish has already been fulfilled.

Appearance

Tails is an anthropomorphic fox cub with amber-orangish fur with a genetic mutation of having two tails with fluffy white tips at the end that makes him able to fly. Other white fur on him are also shown fluffy such as his muzzle and chest fur. His ear canals, while having white fur, is not fluffy but does have a triangular shape. He also has three locks of hair on his forehead.

When he first appeared, he had a long nose like a real fox, this can be seen in early artwork of him. He also had black eyes and was much shorter but now has sky blue eyes and became slightly taller.

Tails also has white glove and shoes with red on the heels and white on the ends.

Personality

In contrast to the single-minded and adventurous Sonic, he is mild-mannered and rather introverted. However, he is not depicted as a pathetic character who runs away or gives up in dangerous situations, and he often acts as an arbitrator when Sonic and Knuckles fight.

However, when Wave laughed at him for setting up a Extreme Gear like an amateur in Sonic Riders, he showed his anger, and in Sonic Lost World, he was jealous of Sonic's attempt to rely on Dr. Eggman, and his pride as a mechanic led him to be harsh with Sonic, but when Sonic was captured by the enemy and was about to be altered and brainwashed, he calmly dealt with the situation and used his tails and Zomom's sandwich pins that were left on the spot to manipulate the computer panel and reprogram it showing a conniving side to him.

Abilities

As an inventor, his skills are no less than those of Dr. Eggman, who has an IQ of 300. He can develop a wide range of devices from fighter planes to terminals, and in fact, most of the mechas in Sonic's camp were created by his own hands, so it is easy to imagine his talent.

He is also skilled at piloting such mechas, and he often pilots the vehicles that appear in the series (although he seems to be unlicensed, and in the anime Sonic X he is provided with various licenses by the government, and in the cartoon Sonic Boom he gets into trouble when he is told about it).

Relationships

Sonic the Hedgehog

He became not only Sonic's best friend, but also a reliable partner. The two act very close that Tails is like a little brother to him. The two help each other with Tails doing such things as carrying Sonic to great heights, building technology for him, and much more.

Dr. Eggman

As a creator of his own mecha, he and Dr. Eggman are often at odds with each other, but the two seem to have something in common, and they sometimes talk and fight together. In Sonic Chronicles, Dr. Eggman becomes a regular friend and collaborator, and the two geniuses seemed very happy to be paired up together. Despite being enemies to each other, they seem to also have a unspoken respect for one another, though Dr. Eggman have mention his respect a few times but not to him.

Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles is yet another close friend of Tails, but sometimes by mistake, he can irritate Knuckles with his technobabble. They don't seem to have much of a rivalry compare to the one Knuckles has with Sonic.

Amy Rose

While he is friendly with Amy, she too can be a bit much for him early on in their relationship with Tails not knowing what to do when dealing with her anger. The two have looked out for one another.
