Overview
Cream the Rabbit (クリーム・ザ・ラビット, Kurīmu za Rabitto) is a fictional rabbit girl from the Sonic series that first appears in Sonic Advance 2, her voice was added in the Sonic X anime.
Amy, the only female player character in Sonic Advance, was a strong and advanced character, so in Sonic Advance 2, Cream can fly, throw Cheese and attack at long range, and auto homing on enemies!
Originally she was made for Sonic Heroes for a Fly Type character for Team Rose, but was added to Sonic Advance 2 first to introduce players to her.
She is also the daughter of Vanilla the Rabbit, making her one few characters in the Sonic series whose family environment is clearly described. She is the youngest of the characters whose age is known, along with Charmy Bee.
Personality
She is well-trained by her mother and speaks politely in a desu-masu style (a polite form of Japanese speech) in her Japanese version (in the subtitles, the desu-masu part is written in katakana, most likely to show her age as katakana is the easiest Japanese alphabet for children). This can be shown in her English incarnation using honorifics such as "Mr" and "Miss" for others and using such polite words like please and thank you.
As such she is a hard worker who works hard at everything she does, and like Tails, she has a thirst for knowledge, curiosity, and honesty, but she is also a spoiled child, adored by Amy and other female characters. In Sonic Rush she is even missed by Blaze, and this attitude helped Blaze to open up to her. While many of the characters around her are free-spirited, she is firm despite her age of six, and falls into the category of sensible people.
She is quite active for a young lady and is not afraid of dangerous adventures. Her athletic ability is also high enough that she rarely lags behind Sonic and his friends (she is also stronger than any of them in terms of performance, despite being a meta-athlete).
Abilities
Her special skills are Cream Ballet (from Sonic Battle), also called flying (fan flight in Japanese, only linked to Cream as other flying characters have names for their flying abilities), which allows her to fly with her rabbit ears flapping like feathers, and the Chao Attack, which causes Cheese to strike her enemies from a distance with her body.
These abilities often make most of the works overwhelmingly easy to use and powerful in battle.
The reason for the strength and ease of use and the creation of Cream was to attract female players to the Sonic series in Sonic Advance 2, the first entry in the series, and because Amy, a female character, was extremely difficult to use in the previous Sonic Advance game, which was aimed at advanced players.
Relationships
Family
Vanilla the Rabbit
Cream's mother, it is believed that Cream is polite because of her discipline. Like Cream, she first appeared in Sonic Advance 2. At that time, she was rescued by Sonic and his friends, and appeared as a kidnapped character. She did not have a name at the time of her first appearance, but her name was revealed in the Sonic X anime. She has appeared in Sonic X many times since episode 39, but so far she has only appeared in the mobile version of the Sonic game series. She is not a player character and is never given a role beyond that of Cream's mother.
She has a very calm personality, and her appearance makes it easy to understand that she is Cream's mother. She does not blame Cream for her adventures with Sonic and his friends. She seems to understand that the adventure is too dangerous for a six-year-old child, but she does not try to stop Cream and waits for her to return home.
In the Japanese version she is called Mama-san by Cream and Mom-san by Sonic and Tails, and Cream's mother by Amy (from the anime).
Cheese
She is best friends with a chao, whose name is Cheese, and they are always together. In Sonic Heroes, Cream and her friends go looking for Cheese's twin, Chocola, and the bond is so strong that Cream becomes angry when Cheese is treated as a pet. In some media and on the internet, Cheese and Chocola are sometimes referred to as males, being given masculine pronouns or being called twin brothers. But this is incorrect, as chaos has no concept of gender.
Gemerl
At first, he followed Dr. Eggman's orders and fought Sonic and his team, but went out of control after capturing the power of the Chaos Emeralds, and powered up to become Ultimate Gemerl. He was defeated by the tag team of Super Sonic and Dr. Eggman and fell into the atmosphere. He was later found by Cream and Vanilla when he collapsed on the ground, and was repaired by Tails at Tails Labs. Since then, he seems to be living peacefully with Cream as a good robot. In the IDW Sonic comics he can be seen in protective guardian role for Cream.
Other Media
Archie Comics
The character actually appeared mainly in the American comic adaptation of Sonic X, but made her first appearance in issue 217 of the main series after the Sonic X series ended. She originally lived in the mansion where Cheese's subordinate Snively's mecha, she moved to New Mobotropolis, where Sonic and his friends live, and through that one incident she became acquainted with Amy and they became friends.
In the Treasure Team Tango arc of Sonic Universe serialized as a separate volume, she not only became friends with Blaze, but also formed Team Rose with Amy and Blaze, and played a major role in the battle for the Sol Emerald. This one incident awakened her to the activity of helping others, and she later became a member of Team Freedom formed by Rotor.
Fan Works
In Japan and abroad, there are also a few fans who draw her as a couple with Tails because of their close age (and probably their relations to flying by an usually body part).
Missing in Action
Because of her politeness, although she appears in the Mario & Sonic Olympic series as a facilitator along with Toad, her intervention in the main story has decreased over the years, and her appearances in parties and racing games as an offshoot are more noticeable. One theory is that this is due to Cream's poor reputation overseas. Various reasons have been cited, including the high-pitched quality of her voice in overseas versions and the fact that she well-behaved yet sweet personality is not childlike and does not make a good impression.
The last confirmed physical appearance of Cream in the main game was an almost all-star appearance in Sonic Generations, and no appearances in Sonic Forces, both with Cheese.
And even though Big had long since reappeared in Team Sonic Racing, she was the only one of Team Rose's members who did not appear (she was replaced by a chao, presumably because of the developers' decision to not let kids race).
As a result of this continual drying up, the pair slot for Blaze was completely settled with Silver.
Trivia
- When mentioning the events of Sonic Adventure in one of the stages of Sonic Heroes, she says, "Amy has been on many adventures, hasn't she?". She also makes a brief cameo appearance in the remake port of Sonic Adventure DX.
- The color of her eyelids has changed in the series' media: in Sonic Heroes and the Sonic X anime, they are the same orange as the rims of her eyes, and in Sonic Generations they are cream colored.
- In the four-panel comic strip in the introductory feature page of Sonic Advance 2 in CoroCoro Comic, she is depicted as a foul-mouthed, high-spirited character, but in the next issue's strip, her character is the same as in the game. Did Sonic Team not hand over the character info to the author who wrote the comic?
