Overview

Sonic Runners (ソニックランナーズ, Sonikku Ran'nāzu) was a side-scrolling platformer in the Sonic series for Android and iOS. The mobile game was developed by Sonic Team and distributed by Sega from 2015 to 2016. A sequel, Sonic Runners Adventure (ソニックランナーズアドベンチャー, Sonikku Ran'nāzu Adobenchā), was distributed in 2017 only in the United Kingdom and Russia.

Presented as a social game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series that can be enjoyed by both beginners and advanced players, the simple game content is to aim for a high score while running continuously through auto-scrolling stages while collecting rings and scores by using obstacles and color powers.

Among these, this game was one of the few social games distributed in Japan, and the music and graphics were created by members of the Sonic team.

The stage design is based on Sonic Lost World, which had just been released at the time, but just because the design is the same does not mean that the adventures are in Lost Hex (although there are elements, such as Zazz's events, that suggest it is a direct sequel to Sonic Lost World).

The storyline, at least for Sonic Colors and Zazz's events, suggests that it is after Sonic Lost World, but it is a simple battle for the seven Chaos Emeralds between Sonic, Dr. Eggman, and others. However, the characters were portrayed in a way that was similar to their personalities prior to Sonic Unleashed and was easily accepted by Japanese fans.

Features

One of the most notable features of this title is that it offers a variety of characters to control, as well as many storylines that complement the main Sonic series, and many interactions between characters who are not involved in the series.

The characters are divided roughly into Heroes and Dark, and then into three categories: Speed (fast moving), Fly (can fly in the air), and Power (can destroy obstacles). Stage information is chosen at random, and players can earn higher scores by watching the information and choosing the appropriate character.

In addition, Buddies support characters, such as Chao, Chaos, Shahra, Merlina the Wizard, Caliburn, Chip, and others who are hard to find in the story and setting, reappear in the game, making it another Sonic Generations.

In the story, there are also some stories that were not revealed in the original Sonic series, such as "Why did the wisp from Sonic Colors reappear?", There are also some dialogues between characters who do not have much opportunity to talk to each other in the games.

However, for better or worse, the game's monotonous gameplay, the content and problems with the game that made it possible to play everything without paying for it, and the distribution of the game ended after one year, despite various new elements, collaborations with Sega such as a Puyo Puyo and a Halloween costume event.
