Overview

Sonic Mania (ソニックマニア Sonikku Mania) is platformer from the Sonic the Hedgehog series released in 2017 and is compatible with the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The following year, Sonic Mania Plus (ソニックマニア・プラス Sonikku Mania Purasu) was released with various additional elements.

The most distinctive feature of the game is its graphic design, which is a return to the pixel art of classic Sonic, and the look and music is full of respect and homage to the Mega Drive era (1, 2, 3, & Knuckles, CD, etc.), both large and small. Even in Sonic Mania Plus, there are even references to Knuckles' Chaotix, which is so detailed that even the most dedicated Sonic fan will have a hard time telling the difference.

Others are from Modern Sonic (the group of works after Sonic Adventure), and some are even from the animated Sonic OVA and games that has not been released in Japan.

Although often misunderstood, this title was not created by the Sonic Team, but rather by a group of game creators who have been avid Sonic fans since that time, and is, in a sense, an "official fan game". Therefore, as the title suggests, the game is overflowing with the above-mentioned love and care for the Sonic series, and in contrast to the Sonic Team's work released around the same time, it was highly acclaimed by fans and review sites both in Japan and overseas.
