Overview
Frye, known in Japan as Utsuho (ウツホ, utsubo) is an idol of Deep Cut in Splatoon 3. Like how Shiver's influence comes from the culture of the Kansai region, Frye has for own influence to the real world, mainly South Asia. She descends from a lineage of moray eel trainers. Like Shiver, she also speaks in a Kansai dialect.
Appearance
Frye is an Inkling with dark brown skin with a color scheme of yellow. Her droopy eyes have golden with orange pupils in the shape of a cross. While Shiver's has a red tint on the ears and fingers, Frye's pointy ears are only red-tinted with purple tints on the fingers and toes, which glow during Splatfests, as well as her shawl with the music. But like how Shiver has earrings on the right ear, Frye has three moray eel tooth-shaped earrings on her right ear as well as triangular eyebrows matching her hair color. Her black mask markings are pretty thick with thick yellow eyelashes with orange on the ends.
Her outfit consists of a sleeveless yellow turtleneck crop top under a small yellow transparent shawl of that like a dupatta or chunni, traditional Indian clothing the expose the stomach as seen with her. Her white baggy pants are most likely patiala pants (dancer pants) or Persian pants but with holes on the left side with purple trims (to contrast the cuts on the right side of Shiver's pants). A large golden squid head charm with purple tassels hangs on the front left of her pants. She also wears yoga socks for her feet.
Frye has two hair locks with the left side on the front and smaller lock on the left in the back. The bigger has a off-white rope forming an X shape with below, a smaller tighter hair tie made from the same material. The cubed orange head piece could be reference to fried calamari, mango chutney, mango sticky rice, a spread mango cut or some kind of food.
Her big forehead was the most cited part of her appearance among fans reminding them of the forehead of Pearl. The reason for Frye's forehead could come from how they are seen as a symbol of good fortune within traditional South India culture. This could be the case seeing that Pearl's forehead adds to her princess theme coming from a eyebrow style from Japanese princess' known as hikimayu.
She also possesses a flute that is actually designed and sounded like a snake charmer.
She is quite tall, and in her signature pose, she stands on her heels and stands on her toes so that she be at the same level as Shiver.
She also wears a eel mask, alluding to a real-world tanuki mask sometimes.
Etymology
Frye is her name in English, coming from the action to fry, something done with heat and making it a contrast to Shiver's name of coldness. It is also a collective terms for a group of eels.
Her Japanese name is Utsuho (ウツホ) coming from the Japanese of moray eel (鱓, utsubo) and a rare feminine given name.
