Overview
Green Hill Zone (グリーンヒルゾーン Gurīn Hiru Zōn), also known as Green Hill (グリーンヒル Gurīn Hiru) is a grassy area with a view of the ocean that exists on the resource-rich South Island. Many of the terrains take advantage of Sonic's speed, such as half-pipe slopes and shuttle loops.
Appearances
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
The first stage in the first game that marked the debut of Sonic the Hedgehog, zone one is the fastest stage in the game. Also appeared in Sonic Mania. The Game Gear version also has a zone of the same name.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
The truth is unknown, but in the beta version of Sonic 2, the later Aquatic Ruin Zone was supposed to be the Neo Green Hill Zone.
In the Game Gear version of Sonic 2, it appears as the fourth stage titled Green Hills Zone. The stage BGM is an arrangement of the Japanese and European intro song of Sonic CD.
Sonic Advance
It is the first zone in Sonic Advance as Neo Green Hill Zone (ネオグリーンヒルゾーン Neo Gurīn Hiru Zōn) with a beach setting.
Sonic Adventure 2
Know as Green Hill is a bonus stage created to commemorate the 10th anniversary. Some of the sound effects of jumping and defeating enemies are the same as those of that time.
However, the condition for unlocking this stage is very hard as you need to get all A-ranks.
Sonic Battle
Just like Sonic Adventure 2, Green Hill is an unblock stage, this time by completing Emerl's story.
Super Smash Bros.
Sonic's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl had the zone show up as a stage. The stage is presented as a 3D stage with depth while following the design of the original.
Tails, Knuckles, and Silver occasionally run through the shuttle loop in the background.
Sonic Generations
Known as Green Hill is the first stage of Sonic Generations recreated for the 20th anniversary. You can also compare it with the original Sonic 1 version that was specially recorded.
Two types of BGM, classic and modern, are newly recorded, and the original BGM is also included.
Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax
Due to being a game publish by Sega the zone appears as a stage titled Seaside B-Field. Many other Sega references can be found in this game such as the Sega Hard Girls stage where a Sonic statue can be seen and color palette #14 for all the characters.
Sonic Mania
Green Hill Zone in Sonic Mania is the first stage. Act 2's background is based off the background of the original Sonic 1 Green Hill Zone prototype from the Sonic the Hedgehog Tokyo Toy Show 1990 Demo.
Sonic Forces
Green Hill turned into more of a desert when Dr. Eggman and his army grew in power.
Sonic Speed Simulator
Green Hill is the first world in the official Sonic Roblox game. It's also the world to unlock Sonic as a playable character.
Sonic Prime
The place acts like a home for Sonic and his friends.
An Unexpected Tie-in
Not only Green Hill Zone, but also the BGM of Sonic 1 was composed by Dreams Come True bassist Masato Nakamura, and perhaps because of this connection, in the summer of 2021, Dreams Come True performed a commercial song for Ito En's Oi Ocha Tea as the Green Hill Zone BGM self-cover Up On The Green Hill (次のせ〜の! で - ON THE GREEN HILL - Tsugino Seno! De - ON THE GREEN HILL -) in the summer of 2021.
