About編集

※SPOILERS BELOW

Gulcasa's mother. She appears in routes A and C, and depending on the route she can be either an enemy or an ally.

Baretreenu is a priestess researching Brongaa's history.

Although Bronquia was originally founded by Brongaa's people, due to the influence the Kingdom of Fantasinia exerts on the continental world, hostility towards Brongaa's descendants eventually spread through Bronquia too, and people born with Brongaa's blood are now exposed to prejudice and generally looked down upon. Baretreenu is no exception, and firmly believes that Brongaa's power is only good for destruction and invasion and makes people miserable. Therefore, she has developed a way to seal Brongaa's blood to allow its carriers to live like pure-blooded humans.

When Baretreenu discovered that her own infant son Gulcasa was not only a carrier of Brongaa's blood, but was a genetic throwback with unusually strong powers, she sealed those powers for fear of what they would mean for his future. As part of this seal, she changed Gulcasa's name to "Garlot".

Yet the seal Baretreenu placed was not strong enough to fully suppress Garlot's powers, and if she were to die or if he ever reclaimed his true name, the seal would break. In order to create a stronger, unbreakable seal, Baretreenu abandoned her family and moved to Lost Aries.

Unfortunately, her husband blamed Garlot for tearing the family apart, and began to abuse him. To make matters worse, the adults who knew of Garlot's demon heritage shunned him as a cursed child and made no move to save him.

Baretreenu returned to Bronquia multiple times in order to cast seals on other children born with Brongaa's blood. One of those children was Emilia, whom her husband fathered out of wedlock, and Baretreenu came to hear of her son's plight (according to Siskier, Garlot's father beat him every day), but she left him to her husband's nonexistent mercy.

To Baretreenu, her research was simply a higher priority than her son's safety; even she herself admits that this behavior makes her unworthy to call herself Garlot's mother.

While Baretreenu acted in order to save her child from the typical tragic life of Brongaa's descendants, in the end she wound up pushing him into the depths of hell with her own hands.

Have you found your answer?

In the A route, Garlot decides to unseal his blood so that he will be strong enough to protect his loved ones and never have to lose anyone again. He travels to Lost Aries, and has the misfortune of running into his mother there.

Baretreenu explains to Garlot who she is and why she abandoned him, along with the fact that she knew his father was abusing him but actively chose not to save him. She also reveals her own prejudice against Brongaa's people, and rejects her son coldly, refusing to break his seal.

She then says that if Garlot still wants his demon powers, he must win them by committing the taboo of matricide, and demands that Garlot duel her to the death.

By doing this, Baretreenu hoped to scare Garlot away, but her verbal abuse is a drop in the bucket compared to the extreme trauma of watching Siskier, who raised him, kill herself to save him. Garlot takes up his weapon with shaking hands and accepts Baretreenu's challenge.

In defeat, Baretreenu willingly breaks the seal on Garlot's blood by teaching him his true name, perhaps as a form of atonement. She leaves her son a few words of comfort as she dies.

Now free of his mother's curse, Gulcasa obtains his full powers and the right to live freely, but Baretreenu's actions leave deep scars on his heart and only add to the mountain of trauma he has to shoulder.

Baretreenu did what she believed was right and bore no particular ill will towards her son, but at the end of the day she's just as toxic a parent as her husband was. It's fair to line her up with Velleman and Alanjame in terms of the pain her machinations cause.

Life is a cycle!

In the C route, Velleman calls Baretreenu as an expert in order to cure Thortie of the sickness caused by his body rejecting his contract with Brongaa, and Baretreenu joins Gram Blaze. As Baretreenu has connections in Asgard due to her research, she realizes Nessiah's true identity, and hatches a plan to destroy him.

In this route Baretreenu's goal is to "return history to the hands of humanity", and she seeks to remove all otherworldly forces that interfere with her world's natural order, not just Brongaa.

Since Nessiah has caused trouble in the past and may do so again in the future, Baretreenu sees him as a threat, and actively aims to catch him in a trap and expose his past misdeeds.

Baretreenu's behavior somewhat resembles that of an Arbitrator, a role explained in other Dept. Heaven games as a mortal resident of a surface world who is charged to protect their world from potential interference or harm from both Asgard and the demons. Because Baretreenu has a bias towards Asgard and order, she isn't a proper Arbitrator, who while allowed to recruit heavenly or demonic assistance still must take a neutral stance between the two and have respect for both order and chaos. However, the way she puts the inhabitants of her world and their safety first is still similar to an Arbitrator's duties.

Some fans criticize Baretreenu's problem-solving in this route as overly convenient, comparing her to Doraemon and calling her a deus ex machina.

The C route gives the player a somewhat clearer view of Baretreenu's personality through her incidental dialogue. As one might expect of a priestess who values nature, order, and the platonic ideal of the surface world, she is often seen proselytizing about the glories of the circle of life.

On the other hand, her morale recovery for certain items and her dialogue pertaining to certain foodstuffs is extremely suggestive, raising the question of whether Baretreenu might be a closet pervert. MILF lovers must be delighted.
